Cultural transmission sometimes follows the hare trail. Fabienne Théorêt doesn’t hunt, but by accompanying the Club des Petits loups Mohiganesh to pick up the snares set by Samuel, an elder, she plays an important role in safeguarding the know-how of her people. It’s one of the links in the chain that connects the old and the young.

Transcript

In the forest, a young woman is standing near a wooden bench. Tipi structures are all around her. She’s wearing orange snow pants, a black and white patterned coat, a tuque and black mittens. Many footprints can be seen on the snow-covered ground.

Hello! My name is Fabienne and we’re here in the small forest behind Kinawit. And, uh, today, uh, we have... No, wait! That's not what I wanted to say. Never mind, let's do this again. Let's start over. Sorry...

[Laughter]

So... Hmm!

Hello! My name is Fabienne. Uh... We’re here behind the small forest in Kinawit, and uh... For those who don't like hunting with guns, well, today we have... we have set traps, more specifically snares to catch hares. Uh, so, earlier, we came with a group of young people. We went through there and, uh, we... we checked all the snares. And Samuel, the guy who set the snares, explained how he did it. And, uh... But we only caught one. So, it’s really…It’s not fun, but that's how it is. So...
