Hello! Here I am in the Montreal Science Center, in an exhibition called Indigenous ingenuity, timeless inventions.

They gave me this bracelet at the entrance where I just present it over some pictograms. At first, there’s a screen with a pictogram of an ulu.

This is a woman showing to a younger one, how to use the ulu. [Reading the subtitles] “This may not be the best to skin because it’s short and not wide enough.”

[Laughter]

So, there are at least 30 interactives. Here you can create with foamy blocks, an inukshuk. There is a kayak to test your stability. Some big interactive walls will just show some animated plants, trees, animals, and tell you legends. Let’s try this one: the legend of Sedna.

“She had refused all offers of marriage. But one day, a strange hunter came in and she agreed to go off with him. The hunter took her to an island where he imprisoned her and revealed his true…”

Let’s continue. Oh! There is some igloo with foamy blocks, numbered. Oh, oh! Like any exhibition, there are big glass boxes with really nice objects. I am looking at an amauti here. Let’s continue.

Oh! There’s an igloo with foam blocks numbered.

Like any exhibition, there are big glass boxes with really nice objects to look at.

There’s another station here with Stanley volant, who is an Innu surgeon. “… et je me trouve actuellement à la salle d’opération du bloc opératoire de l’hôpital de Dolbeau-Mistassini.” Oh! There’s a problem with this one, we’re just hearing the left channel.

We can learn a lot of things the way indigenous peoples do. By doing, by observing. What’s next? Oh! A super heavy mattress where you can walk. Woo! It’s like snow and there are snowshoes. Yes, I can try snowshoes here, on this mattress.

Again, there is this wall with a bow and some arrows. You can hunt big animals. These are silhouettes passing by in the screen. That is so nice!

[Laughter]

“Be careful to ensure the survival of her young, do not kill the mother.” So these are learning from this interactive hunt. Oh! Here, there’s an installation on the crooked knife: it shows how to hold the crooked knife and… OK, let’s try this, let’s just sit on the bench. With this wooden piece on me. Oh yes, I’m doing it! It’s green so, obviously I’m not so wrong about it.

And here is a tipi. And there a virtual reality set with a dog sled, sweet! You can catch salmons with harpoons. Yes!

So, there it is, the exhibition on indigenous ingenuity. Hopefully you’ll get here in Montreal, or you’ll see the exhibition around your place, cause it’s a travelling exhibition, so you may be able to experience it by yourself.

Hello !

I am currently on Innu Nikamu site, it’s a grass field in the Uashat mak Mani-Utenam Innu community. Innu Nikamu is some festival, a music festival where a lot of artists are performing. We’re Saturday evening, and we’re currently awaiting the fireworks. It’s a big event, there are lots of people on the site presently. There are artisans, they are selling arts and crafts, clothes, they are selling food, traditional and fast food. Now, I am passing behind one of these kiosks, in the form of a teepee.

The scene is right in front of me, there are a lot of people in their chairs and there are benches all around. It smells really nice. People for another community, Mashteuiatsh, which is an Innu community, are presently preparing the fire, because they are cooking for everyone for tomorrow morning, in fact tomorrow noon. There are going to be traditional “banique” and everything, so it smells already really nice. There are at my right, just passing by a traditional structure with sand and fire. That’s where they are cooking the bread, behind the scenes.

It's already been ten days since I'm here. Kangiqsujuaq. For sure I'm telling this wrong.

Lots of four-wheelers. People in here are travelling.

Everything is walking-distanced, but there's a bus. Yes, people can call the bus for one dollar to go anywhere in the town.

The snow melted really fast this year. In fact, people say that each year, they lose a couple of days of winter.

Hopefully you hear water running. I'm going down the hill right now.

People don't understand why they paved the road, they say it tears off the tires more quickly. When you know that a four-wheeler tire here costs 200 dollars, it's kind of nonsense for them.

Each day I'm going to the COOP, it's a store here. Everything is coming here by boat and by plane.

It's always windy.

It's already been 10 days. Each day, we're going out of the flat. Whenever we’re not working, you can go to the COOP and passing through the ice ring, where children play, and then on the bridge.

COOP is one of the two stores they have here.

After school, children are running all over the place, actually they're bicycling right now.

Han-Han !

I just arrived at the community centre in Odanak.

Today, there is a powwow, traditional powwow. Actually, it’s the second edition. Parking is already full.

And here we are at the door. At the entrance there are kiosks. The original Peruvian who is selling coats and blankets in wool. Community artisans selling objects and herbs and some other local products.

There are chairs in the corner. Already the people are wearing their regalia. In one corner, there are drummers preparing to start.

Oh, someone that I know.
