October 21, 2018
Odanak

As part of its program to revitalize traditional practices, the Musée des Abénakis in Odanak organized a drum-making activity. The demand was so high that two groups had to be formed. The workshops are led by Jean-Paul Lamirande, a specialist in skin work, a skill that his grandfather passed on to him. He generously teaches the participants how to cut the skin, prepare the babiche that will be used to stretch it on the drum and create the stick that will make the drum resonate. He guides them through each step, as someone once did for his grandfather.

Transcript

In the multifunctional room of the Musée des Abénakis, three tables are placed in a u-shaped manner. Four women are present and working on drum making under the watchful eye of Mr. Lamirande. Chairs are stacked along the walls. Another table, placed under a window, collects clothes. Two spectators, a man and a child, watch the four women work. The man is talking with one of them.
